United Natural Foods

United Natural Foods (UNFI) which distributes organic and natural foods and supplements, climbed in heavy volume Thursday. Like many other stocks showing some price strength these days, United Natural has some fundamental flaws that need to be balanced with its good points.

  • United Natural is a small cap, that trades a little more than 400,000 shares per day.
  • Its Earnings Per Share Rating is 86.
  • In the most recent quarter, earnings growth was excellent, at 52%. But that followed following several quarters of declining year-over-year profit growth.
  • Sales growth has decelerated the past two quarters.
  • Fund ownership has grown in recent quarters, but at a slow pace. As the price rises, you'd like to see big investors piling in at a faster rate.
  • United Natural's Accumulation/Distribution Rating is A, showing strong buying in recent weeks.
