Driving More Traffic to Xangans - An Experiment
Today we started experimenting with the "Top Blogs" module on Xanga's frontpage to see if we can drive more traffic to your Xanga sites with it.

First, we moved the module higher on the page - this move doesn't really require formal experimentation... the new placement should drive more clicks - woohoo!

Now, we're experimenting with four different versions of that module:
  1. Top 10 "Top Blogs", in order - this is the version of the module we've been using for a while
  2. Top 50 "Top Blogs", randomized - greater variety of posts, gives more people a chance to make it to the frontpage
  3. Top 10 "Most Rec'd", in order - there's a lot of overlap between "Top Blogs" and "Most Rec'd", but there seem to be some breakout (and interesting) posts in Most Rec'd that don't always make it to Top Blogs
  4. Top 50 "Most Rec'd", randomized - just like #2, above - offers greater variety and gives more people a chance
This one is a more formal experiment: we are randomly choosing one of the four to show each visitor (for the next week, you should be seeing only one of these four) and we are collecting careful click-through data.

We're going to run the experiment for about a week, crunch the data and then share the results with all of you to help us all make a decision on how best to use that module to drive traffic.

In the meantime, we'd love to hear from people seeing each of the four different versions - do you like the version you're seeing or do you think you'd prefer a different one? Again, we're agnostic on the four versions... we just want to find the most effective way to drive traffic. The data will help inform the ultimate decisions here, but your comments are definitely helpful as well.

Thanks!

One For One
Genocide. Torture. Slavery. Poverty. Rape. Murder. Abuse. How much do these words weigh in your heart? They weigh heavy in mine. Some days reading the paper makes my eyes blur and my heart cry. Some times I cannot comprehend the evils of mankind and our ability to do such injustice to our own people. It disgusts me.  But I also refuse to believe that genuinely good people no longer exist. Call me naive but I believe there is good in every person. I sincerely believe that they exist, not because of hidden agendas or underlying intentions, but because they just do. These are the people who inspire the rest of us to be like them. They inspire me to believe that small steps can lead to bigger steps.

Are you a Troll on Xanga? QUIZ

It has come to my attention that some Troll types do not even seem to realize that they are trolls, hence this quiz. Answer these 20 questions if you really want to know for sure (scoring is at the end).   1)  You have visited a blog and made unsolicited negative comments about the blogger, rather than dealing with the actual content of the post. True or False

5 Things Girls Want in a Guy
5. Girls love sensitive and artsy guys. Don't be afraid to show that you like music or fashion. Girls absolutely adore guys that actually have feelings and don't pretend that they're hard core manly men. Actually for me, manly men are a turn off because they don't understand feelings at all. I think sensitive guys are adorable!

Old School vs. New School hotties
Ok, so there's a whole new breed of the "teenybopper hottie" I'm exactly hip to them like I was when I was 16.  And in fact, I don't think most of them hold a candle to the guys who were the $hit back when I was younger.  But here's the best comparison I could do: Round #1 Hot Boy Band: Jonas Brothers versus Backstreet Boys.

My $.25 engagement ring

"I love you!" he declared. I looked at him stupidly.  It was the first time a boy has told me he loved me.  We were both nine years old at the time. "I don't believe you."  My mom told me that you can never trust boys at this age - they are always so fickle. Besides, we have only been going out for two weeks.  Actually I didn't even realize it was our two weeks anniversary until he brought it to my attention.

Teenage Pregnancy: What It's Really All About

I am a young mom, which is stating the obvious. I'm 22, but look about 14. I get all kinds of crazy looks from strangers when they see me wagging around two little ones. What really blows people's mind is when they discover that I am very happily married to the father of my precious babies. People usually expect that I was the knocked up teenager that was deserted by her babies' daddy. The sad fact is that they think this because that is the typical scenario in today's world.
