Salesforce Meets EPS Views, But Outlook Disappoints

Salesforce.com met second-quarter earnings estimates Wednesday as sales edged out views, but shares plunged after the company's full-year guidance fell short of analysts' forecasts. For the quarter that ended July 31, the software-as-a-service provider earned 8 cents a share ex special items, a 167% jump vs. the same quarter last year. Sales rose 49% to $263 million, slightly over the average estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Ericsson, STMicro form venture

The world's biggest wireless equipment maker and chipmaker, STMicroelectronics, will combine their wireless chip and software businesses. Ericsson (ERIC) will pay $700 mil cash to STMicro, and contribute $1.1 bil to the venture. STMicro (STM) will contribute $1.2 bil in assets. The venture, built on ST-NXP wireless business, will compete with rivals such as Qualcomm (QCOM) and Texas Instruments. (TXN) Ericsson shares rose 1 cent. STMicro gained 2.5% to 12.20.
