Cell phone sales continue to fall

U.S. consumers bought 28 mil cell phones in Q2, down 13% from the year-ago period, according to a report by researcher NPD Group. IT was the 3rd straight quarter of lower sales and the lowest number since NPD began tracking them in 2005. The total value only fell 2% to $2.4 bil, as the handsets sold tended to be more expensive and have more features. Motorola's (MOT) phones were most popular, but its share of the units sold fell to 21% from 32%. • Apple (AAPL) updated iPhone software to help fix connection problems in Europe. T-Mobile said users can download the software to their iPhones, but it wasn't clear if the upgrade would fix all the glitches. Meanwhile, Apple said batteries from a single supplier are to blame for the meltdown of some iPod Nano music players in Japan. Apple shares fell 1.1% to 173.53.
