Stocks Get Thrashed On Narrowly Mixed Volume

Stocks got slammed Monday, with retailers, banks and builders suffering the hardest blows. The Dow plunged 2.1%. Dow component American International Group, posted a 5% loss. The Nasdaq composite and the S&P 500 each shed 2%. The NYSE composite dropped 1.7%. Steel Dynamics posted the Nasdaq 100's biggest volume move, down 8%.

Kendle International (KNDL) hails from the Medical-Dental Services industry group, ranked No. 18 among IBD's 197 groups. Kendle does clinical trials for pharmaceutical and biotech companies. It's based in Cincinnati, but operates in 28 countries. It's featured in one of the mini company profiles in today's IBD 100 section.

  • Kendle is a small cap, with a market capitalization of $684 million.
  • It trades 251,000 shares a day. As often noted in the DSAs, stocks trading under 300,000 shares a day can be more volatile than more widely traded issues.
  • It recently reported earnings of 52 cents a share, up 79% from the same quarter a year ago.
  • Mutual fund ownership has increased in each of the past three quarters.
  • Kendle's Accumulation/Distribution Rating is A-, showing a healthy level of buying in the past 13 weeks.
