Energy and Commodities Tow Markets To Mixed Close

Indexes tip-toed to a narrowly mixed close after financials rebounded on a ratings upgrade for Lehman Bros. The NYSE composite led the pack, up 0.4% largely on the strength of a 2.2% gain by its energy index. The S&P 500 added 0.2% and the Dow 0.1%. The Nasdaq lagged, down 0.4%. Small caps also lagged, as the S&P 600 ran 0.8% lower. Preliminary data put trading volume 15% lower on the NYSE and down 13% on the Nasdaq.

DXP Enterprises

Even though the market rally has fallen under pressure, you still want to keep your watch list ready with stocks performing well fundamentally and technically — even those not currently approaching a proper buy point. One such stock is DXP Enterprises, (DXPE) which makes pumps, cutting tools and other gear used for industrial applications. It's been featured numerous places in IBD lately, including Nasdaq Stocks In The News and The New America.

  • DXP is a very small company, with a market capitalization of just $330 million, and it's thinly traded, moving only about 99.000 shares per day. Smaller stocks like this are less liquid and more prone to volatility than a larger cap.
  • The stock has an Earnings Per Share Rating of 97. Earnings growth in the most recent quarter reached 66%.
  • Sales grew at a triple-digit rate the past three quarters.
  • It's from the Machinery-General Industrial industry group, ranked No. 3 among IBD's 197 groups.
